How to Install Additional RAM in a Computer
This guide shows step by step instructions on how to install RAM (Random Access Memory) in your PC.
Computers purchased within last few years use DDR3, DDR2, or DDR type RAM modules. If you are curious, DDR stands for Double Data Rate.
Step 1: Purchase compatible RAM Modules from your local or online computer store. If you have a branded Computer such as Dell, HP or Gateway, make sure you note down the model number before you go to the store. If you have an unbranded (aka white box) PC, we suggest taking out an existing RAM module from your PC and bring it to your local computer store to ensure you purchase a compatible RAM Module.
Memory modules are fool proof; meaning they can be installed only in one direction. Depending on the type of memory you are installing, they may have one or two cuts at the bottom. These cuts align with cuts on RAM slots on the motherboard in only one direction.
Step 2: Disconnect power cable from the back of the computer and open the computer case, using a screwdriver if required. Consult your user manual if you are unclear how to open the case.
Step 3: Find an empty RAM slot on the motherboard and open the white or black clips using your thumbs (see picture below for illustration).
Step 4:Carefully place new memory module in the slot. Make sure the cuts on memory module and cuts on the motherboard slot are aligned. Then gently apply pressure on the top of the RAM module with your thumbs. Clips on the slot will automatically lock the memory module in place.
Step 5: Visually inspect all wires to make sure they will not touch any fan(s) once you close the case.
Step 6: Close the computer case, connect power wire back to the computer and turn it on.
Almost all computers automatically recognize newly installed memory without any configuration. If you hear beeps or screen goes blank, this means your computer did not recognize the RAM module. Try reinstalling the RAM module in a different slot on the motherboard.
If everything fails, contact your local computer professional for help.
